Jane and Dan Goat Ranchers

Goat Prints

In July of 2002 my huband Dan and I bought our first three Boer cross does. I had been reading about goats for some time and I was very surprised when my husband loaded up a homemade goat trailer and off we went to buy our first goats. We wanted to see what goat tending was like, so we would know if we were cut out to be goat ranchers

I soon knew I really liked goats. We drove to Newton, Kansas and bought our first registered buck, Zeus. When Gorgeous had twins I think we both knew we were in the goat business.

Later I had the chance to buy 8 full blood registered does and a paint buck named Lucky. Seven years later we have expanded our herd to about 60 does, ten bucks and the wethers and doelings that we market.

History of Boer Goats

The Boer goat came to the United States in April 1993. They were developed in South Africa in the 1950's.

Boer goats are hardy. They can survive varied environments, have a high birth rate and produce meat rather than milk.

Boer goats usually have white bodies and brown heads. There are red and paint Boers. Boers have long ears. They are fast growing, and good mothers.

"Boer" is a Dutch word meaning farmer.
